A pool builder reached out to us and requested assistance with the removal copper stain all throughout the pool. We addressed the concern by decreasing the pH low enough to remove the blemishes. The process lasted about a week of testing and rebalancing water chemistry in order to maintain enough acidity in the water to fully remove the copper stains. This photo pictured above shows approximately day 4 of the copper stain treatment. The cloudiness in the pool is due to the low pH necessary for the stain removal, but at this point all stains had been removed. This type of staining can occur when the copper levels in a pool are high which may interact poorly with shock such as a calcium hypochlorite compound. These stain can appear as dark blue or even black. These stains are treatable but preventative measures such as regular maintenance, proper weekly testing and rebalancing of water chemistry, can prevent these stains from forming. These copper stains are cosmetic and do not affect functionality, but can become quite an eyesore.
